Üretken olmayan emek (Non-productive or unproductive labor): Adam Smith’e göre üretken olmayan emek, bir şey üretildiği anda elde edilen değerin tüketildiği emektir. Adam Smith’in ayrımına göre fabrikada çalışan bir işçi üretken bir emek ortaya koyarken, bir hizmetçinin ortaya koyduğu emek üretken değildir.[1] Buna karşın Marx’a göre bir emeğin üretken olması için artı değer üretmesi gerekir, “lüks” üretimler ise artı değer üretmemektedir, bu yüzden her ne kadar bu üretimler patronlara gelir sağlasa da onları üretenlere ancak kapitalist ekonominin tamamında ortaya konan değerin fazlasını gelirini sağlar.[2]
