26th Istanbul LGBT Honor Week Starts: Borders!

Istanbul LGBT Honor Week, organized for the first time in 1993 under the name of “sexual freedom week", is celebrating its 26th birthday this year.

There will be many events such as panels, workshops, forums in the “Border” themed week, from 25 June to 1 July 2018.

The first Honor walk was held in 2003 exactly ten years after the honor week began to take place. That first march, which had hardly 23 participants, has grown exponentially every year. It is stated that 50 thousand people participated in the march of 2003. As for 2015 and 2016 the honor walk was unexpectedly blocked by the police. However, in the 14th honor march, the LGBT movement was determined to fight “dispersed” to first whole of Beyoğlu then to the most parts of Istanbul. In 2017, which was the 15th year of the march, the marchers gathered in various parts of Taksim despite of the police barriers.

The honor week committee is concerned about this year’s theme, Border, saying: “We want to talk about all the borders only in favor of powerful ones, to fight them with all of our power and to make invisible borders visible. We have full faith that we will abolish the ones that limitlessly propagating hate speech about our lives, bodies and feelings. We believe we will be able to determine the limits of what belongs to us.”
