An Association Awarded by the State: Malatya Atmalılar Social Aid and Solidarity Association
Atmalılar Social Aid and Solidarity Association in Malatya was awarded for their project on smoking cessation, both by the State and by the institutions which fight against smoking. Getting the support of the state and some business people, the association implemented important projects for the education of local children.
We interviewed Mehmet Ali Başıbüyük, president of the association.
Can you briefly tell us about the association?
The association was founded in 1994 and it involves 9 villages. I was chosen as president in 2003 and continue my duty since then.
What about your campaign called “Quit Smoking, Contribute to Education”?
We were aware of the educational problems the locals were facing. After students were directed to regional boarding schools, we were concerned about their psychological states. First, we started working to provide clothings for 115 students. We calculated a smoker’s monthly and annual cost. Our slogan was “quit smoking, contribute to education”. This project drew interest. In 2005-2006’s educational year, five business people sponsored 175 students.
And you were awarded for your work.
Yes, this made us very proud. The Ministry of Health awarded 13 institutions and one was our association. We got our award from the Minister himself. Also, Turkish Anti-Smoking Association awarded us which made us very proud.
